DIY Silhouettes and a Quick Clock Makeover!

What a busy month it's been! But, of course, I've found time to squeeze in a few projects. ;)
Here's a great vintage clock that I found at a thrift store (for six bucks!)
...and it works. If it didn't, I would have painted chalkboard paint on the face and drawn in a clock.

Here's a great way to make your own silhouettes.
I made mine in about 10 minutes, and here's how!
First, I dug around and found pictures of my girls where they are looking to the side.
Next, I printed out their pictures on regular white letter paper.
(make sure you zoom the picture in so that they fill up most of the page)
Cut out the silhouette, it should look like this...
Now flip them over. Next, I set them onto black construction paper and traced them with a pencil.
You can throw away the white paper and cut out the black silhouettes.

Ta da! Here they are... and do you see the clock? Gotta love that spray paint!

Yellow Spray Painted Quilt Rack

I have had yellow fever lately, probably due to this beauty.
So the next culprit to yellow spray paint was our quilting rack! My mother-in-law makes AMAZING quilts (see monster quilt here) and we have some for every season and holiday so naturally they need to be on display! Can't wait to get my Halloween quilts out!
Here is the plain BEFORE:
And the fun, happy AFTER:

Next up for yellow paint? Our kitchen chairs.

Yellow Desk Makeover

While I was visiting my family, my sister and I (ok, really just my sister) painted one of my Dad's many old desks YELLOW for her daugther's room. I didn't get to see the finished product in person but these pictures are to die for! There were 3 fabric panels on top of the desk under the glass top that she covered with the most adorable fabric.
Here is the BEFORE:
We took off all the casing around the bottom because one piece was missing on the front left there, only to find it when we took out all the drawers. Oh well, I like it better without them.
My sister going to town with the sander. I can't believe I have gone my whole life without one of those!
A little primer action. We used spray paint for the whole thing and since it was pretty potent and I am preggo, I had to stay back a bit. It was killing me to not get in on all the action.

And the adorable AFTER:
The handles are spray painted a plum purple which just makes it even more fun.
That is one lucky little 5 year old who gets this desk:)

{Mini} Bathroom Makeover

My bathroom changes every other month. . . just like most things in my house. I have a problem, I know.
I tried painting a mural on the wall behind the toilet, I didn't like it and no one could match the gray paint that was already on the walls when we moved in. So, I thought I had to paint the whole wall brown because that was the color I was using to paint the mural, not realizing I could do some fun stripes or something in a DIFFERENT color.
Still kicking myself for using brown, I just don't think it looks good next to the gray.
Anyway, I then attempted a second little mural on the other wall . . .
see dandelions below.
Which I like, I just keep thinking I should have painted it white or some other color.
Suggestions - Comments???
so glad I captured the sonic care toothbrush in this pic - and in a toothbrush in the after pic.
that is what happens when you are married to a dentist . . . toothbrushes all over the place:)
After painting ALL the trim and doors in my house white (will NEVER do that again),
I was able to spice it up a bit . . .
with new curtains . . . thank you Target,
new rug . . . thank you Target,
some white spray paint on old frames and file folders
and a little white bird made from this pattern
I think I can live with the brown and gray wall  combo through residency now . . . maybe.

The wonders of spray paint and {winner announced}!

we have some exciting news here at sugartot designs . . . a new contributor!!
let me introduce you to sarah roberts . . . aka, my long lost sister.
here we are with our almost 2 year olds and almost newborns (she has girls, i have boys)
the similarities between are us are almost scary (and i am not just talking about the red hair).
sarah is the one who gave me the courage to just go for it when it comes to painting and DIY projects. she is a master at it and has her own mini "lowe's" in her house complete with every color paint you will ever need. i always ask her advice before starting anything and not sure what i would do without her expertise.
so now that you know a little about sarah, here is a little peak into her world of spray paint . . .

HI! so excited to be posting today about my favorite hobby, paint. During naptime, i'll run outside with a can of spray paint and something from around the house that needs a splash of color to get a quick fix. It's painting without the brush, the mess, the stirring, rinsing and those horrible rollers. I know, I know... you need them for whole-wall revamping (btw-i never, ever reuse them. it's a pain and they don't work well after that first time). Here are a few of my latest "quick fixes" from naptime- hopefully they'll stir up some ideas for your house...

Okay, this lamp was awful. sorry, i couldn't bear to hold my camera up to it "before". yep, that bad. Gold with black flecks. ugh- straight from 1985, but I loved the shape. So I used one- yes, one- coat of high gloss white and a clearance shade from target. voila! you'd never know that I got it in the free bin at a yard sale.

Fireplace tool rack. Gas Fireplace. Ha! I ditched the tools (not so great with toddlers anyways and it's perfect for umbrellas). This should really be a trash to treasure post, but anyways, this took about two coats of a very eclectic blue. I wanted a color that you would never see on a fireplace tool set.

Before, and After. This chandelier was in the "donate" pile until I decided that changing it from hard-wired to a plug wasn't as hard as it looked. And of COURSE, it needed a fresh coat of spray paint! I kept all of the doodads on it while i sprayed it- it helped keep track of things. However, if you like to take things apart to clean them, take the doodads off first. They are stuck for good otherwise.

Ahhh. so fresh and clean... and check out that toggle switch and plug!

you know that ugly patio furniture that EVERYONE has... it's white, plastic and less than appealing? not anymore!! Yep, you can spray plastic, glass, fabric, wood, metal and stone... and occasionally your fingers. you no longer need a plastic primer, many paint companies have come out with spray paint that will stick to plastic... Hooray!
I saved the best for last. I'm not really into the jungle look at my house, so these brown elephants either needed a makeover or had to go. They're now in our bedroom, but I still haven't found shades worthy enough of their pinkness. :) Now go and turn something drab to fab!
